Petrol prices have hit new records despite plummeting wholesale costs, the Automobile Association has said.
The average price of petrol was 167.03p a litre on Sunday, compared with 165.89p just before the start of the weekend.
Diesel now averages 178.97p a litre, up from 177.34p before the weekend.
The cost of wholesale petrol on Friday was down 12p a litre from its peak of 78.35p to 66.15p on 8 March.
Luke Bosdet, the AA’s spokesman, said: “Pre-pandemic, the retailers would sit on lower-cost savings and wait for either Asda or Morrison to announce price cuts, and then start to bring their prices down. Now that that competitive thrust has largely gone, drivers and businesses in desperate need of the financial relief from lower pump prices must struggle on.”
“If this price behaviour at the pump continues, the government needs to implement Northern Ireland’s fuel price transparency to show drivers what savings are possible.”
