England’s all-time record women’s goalscorer has announced she is retiring from football.
Ellen White, 33, revealed her decision on Twitter, saying it was “one of the hardest decisions of my life” but the “right decision for me”.
It is her “time to say goodbye to football and watch the next generation shine”, the Manchester City striker added in a statement.
White was part of the England team that won the women’s Euros last month and said her “dreams came true” when the Lionesses became champions of Europe at Wembley.
The forward scored 52 goals in 113 appearances.
“It has been my greatest honour and privilege to play this game,” she said. “Playing for England has and always will be the greatest gift.”
Reflecting on her stellar career, she added: “You don’t have to be the best at something to make your dreams come true – just look at me.”
A “great recipe” for success is “hard work, dedication, passion and love for what you do”, she went on.
“Don’t ever let someone tell you ‘you can’t do something or achieve your dreams’.
“I was once told I couldn’t play in the boys’ team and I would never play for England. Now I am retiring having made 113 caps with 52 goals for England and a European Champion.”
