Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi has said protesters should be “confronted decisively” following unrest sparked by the death of a woman who was in the custody of the morality police.
Authorities have been cracking down on people who are angry over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She had been arrested for wearing “unsuitable attire”.
Iranian state TV suggests that as many as 26 protesters and police have been killed since violence erupted last weekend.
The morality police detained Miss Amini last week, saying she did not properly cover her hair with a headscarf – known as the hijab – which is mandatory for Iranian women.
Miss Amini collapsed at a police station and died three days later.
