A driver has been arrested and commuters have suffered major disruption after a car smashed through a railway bridge in Greater Manchester and fell onto the tracks below.
The collision closed rail lines between Manchester and Liverpool this morning and all trains running to nearby Newton-le-Willows. Trains to Wigan North Western station are also affected.
The Manchester Evening News reported that Greater Manchester Police said the car crashed at a roundabout on Regent Road in Salford near Manchester City Centre before landing upside down on the tracks.
“Driver arrested for positive breath sample,” the post on X added.
British Transport Police added that the driver was taken to hospital for assessment but is “not thought to be badly injured”.
Network Rail said: “We are sorry to passengers travelling between Liverpool and Manchester today. Due to a police incident overnight involving a vehicle on the line at Salford no trains are running.”
