Anjem Choudary has been charged with three terror offences, the Met Police has said.
The 56-year-old from east London was arrested last week along with Khaled Hussein, 28, after the Canadian national arrived on a flight to Heathrow Airport.
Choudary was on Sunday charged with membership of a proscribed organisation, addressing meetings to encourage support for a proscribed organisation, and directing a terrorist organisation.
Hussein is charged with membership of a proscribed organisation.
The pair are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Monday.
It comes after Met counter-terrorism detectives investigating alleged membership of a proscribed group arrested both men last Monday.
They were held under terrorism laws until they were charged and remanded in custody to appear in court.
