Speaker Mike Johnson met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday as the new speaker makes his first official foray into foreign policy.
“I’m really looking forward to working with you,” Albanese said.
The speaker, who diplomats around the world are rushing to get up to speed about, made no comments as he met with the prime minister.
Albanese also met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell later on Thursday morning following a state dinner at the White House hosted by President Joe Biden.
Attendees for the Senate meeting also included Senate Foreign Relations Chair Ben Cardin (D-Md.); Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.); and Sens. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.).
